Timing specification and rule-based systems

Good software engineering tools should allow for verification of the required real-time behaviour before implementation. Several modelling techniques exist, e.g. Petri-nets, VDM, Z, and Statecharts, but most of these cannot completely model hard real-time problems. Existing methods can roughly be grouped in three groups: . State-l Modelbased approaches l Algebraic and functional approaches l Process algebra The main drawback of formal languages is that they are not pragmatic enough, while the semi-formal languages may not supply the required proof. The ObjectOriented methodology (OMT) [3] and the Q-methodology [2] provide a good combination. The intuitive approach is offered by the OMT method while the real-time proof is generated with the Q-methodology.
